American Mary Blu-ray Review
It was only a matter of time until a horror auteur (or in this case, twin horror auteurs) would approach the subject of cosmetic body modification. We're not talking the usual facelifts and breast implants here; we're talking tongue-splitting, limb-swapping and genital removal. The subject is ripe for a David Cronenberg-style body horror riff. Is American Mary, the new film from 'Twisted Twins' Jen & Sylvia Soska (Dead Hooker in a Trunk), destined to become the definitive body mod horror flick? Probably not, but it is definitely a spirited attempt.
American Mary sees the welcome return of horror fan favourite Katharine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps series, Freddy vs. Jason) as Mary Mason, a talented but completely broke aspiring surgeon. When Mary starts to fall behind with her medical school payments, she applies for a job at a sleazy Go-Go bar. The proprietor (Antonio Cupo) notices on her resume (yes, she brought her resume to a strip club interview) that Mary is a surgeon and as fate would have it, a situation arises at the bar that gives Mary a chance to earn big bucks for her surgical skills.
Before long, word of Mary’s talent spreads, and she begins taking on ‘underground’ surgery jobs that are too extreme for legitimate channels. At first, she is quite professional about this new scene, but when Mary is date-raped by a person she thought she could trust, something in her flips, and her vengeful butcher side is released.
The film’s direction by the Soska sisters is impressively restrained; this isn’t an over-the-top gore show. The sisters understand that just the idea of some of these medical procedures is creepier than actually showing them in grisly detail. It’s also even creepier when the end result is shown.
Their writing however, is not yet at the same level. Within the opening minutes of the film, we have a med school professor dropping F-bombs in a lecture and telling Mary “I have enough useless twats in my class”. We get it, you know some swear words, but there’s more to writing interesting dialogue than having your characters say outrageous things. There are also major structural problems, with numerous subplots that go nowhere, and an ending that comes about seemingly because the writers couldn’t figure out how to close the film. Mostly, the problem lies in a lack of focus on any single story element.
Katharine Isabelle comes off extremely well. She has a screen presence that eclipses all of her co-stars, and it also helps that she looks great in the numerous gothic, S&M-style costumes she wears throughout the film. With a better story, ‘Bloody’ Mary could’ve been a new horror icon.
There’s a lot of potential for the Soska sisters to become great horror directors. They have a nice visual flair that is full of style without being overly flashy, and their approach to the way violence and gore is shown in the film is restrained and mature. While the film has its problems, there is a lot to like here for die-hard horror fans and body mod enthusiasts.
