Evangelion: 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone tells the story of a Japan in the not-too-distant future that is plagued by attacks from giant monsters known as Angels. To combat these Angels, humanity has devised NERV, a government organization tasked with protecting the world by using giant Mecha known as EVAs. Only certain, gifted children chosen by the Marduk Institute are able pilot them, which is why Gendo, the cold and emotionless Supreme Commander of NERV, summons his own son, Shinji, to pilot Evangelion Unit-01 after his star pilot, Rei, is critically wounded.

KAIJU / MECHA WATCH! Evangelion: 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone Blu-ray Review

Shinji is a scared-shitless child, so it isn't hard to sympathise with him when he is thrust directly into a battle with a giant monster, without any previous experience whatsoever. Helping him through the situation however, is Lt. Colonel Misato Katsuragi, a beautiful woman that seems carefree and silly, but is dead serious when it comes to the effectiveness of her role in this war against the angels. After winning his first battle, Shinji moves in with Misato and the recovering pilot Rei. While he be able to form a connection with the distant and emotionally fragile Rei? And will he earn his father's respect and love, two things he has never seen?

Comprised mostly of events from the first six episodes of the Neon Genesis Evangelion series, Evangelion: 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone adapts the original story with new, cutting edge, CG-assisted animation that proves to be the pinnacle of the format thus far. Thankfully, all of these new bells and whistles haven't tarnished the story. While Shinii's whining can get tiresome at times, this is still an immensely emotional, action-packed film of biblical proportions. Anime fans owe it to themselves to experience the Evangelion saga.

On Blu-ray, Evangelion: 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone looks absolutely jaw-dropping. This is clean, vibrant HD animation with a huge sense of scale and visual panache that pops from the screen. Each battle from the film is like world's best argument for purchasing Anime on Blu-ray. This a reference quality disc. Both the Japanese and English dubs are provided in Dolby TrueHD 6.1 tracks that have exceptional clarity of sound, and provide a bass-filled aural soundscape that adds a real sense of weight to each Angel confrontation.

Evangelion: 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone is a must buy disc for fans of the series, casual anime fans, and is even recommended as a blind-buy for people that loved Pacific Rim and want more Kaiju and Mecha action. Highly recommended. Stay tuned for a blu-ray review of its sequel, Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance in the near future.
