The Great Gatsby gets the Great Jay-Z to Score
Visionary director Baz Luhrmann's much anticipated film adaptation of the classic novel The Great Gatsby just got a freakin' cool composing team - Hip-Hop legend Jay-Z (a.k.a. Hova, Iceberg Slim, J-Hova, Jazzy, Jigga, Negus, Curly, Rodimus Prime... Okay, so I made the last few aliases up) and Musician/producer/songwriter/actor The Bullitts (a.k.a. Jeymes Samuel).
The Bullitts announced the collaboration last night via Twitter. "Jay-Z and myself have been working tirelessly on the score for the upcoming #CLASSIC The Great Gatsby," said The Bullitts. He continued, "It is too DOPE for words!"
Whether the DOPEness-level of the film's score will actually cause the complete breakdown of communication in society via words is too early to determine, though one could argue that the advent of 'tweeting' is proof that it has already begun.
Also, if you are one of those people who have a problem with hip-hop music appearing in a period film set in the roaring twenties, you:
A) Have already forgotten (or haven't seen) the brilliant way in which Luhrmann brought Shakespeare into a modern day setting in Romeo + Juliet, or his outstanding and original use of modern day anthems like Smells Like Teen Spirit in the film Moulin Rouge!
B) Have no imagination whatsoever.
C) Are mildly racist.
Anyway, here's the film's latest trailer. The release of this trailer was a momentous occasion, not only because it made the film look super cool, but also because it proved to be a turning point for the people who choose trailer music. They've finally discovered a Filter song that isn't Hey Man Nice Shot.
