The Oscar Nominations Are In!
Ladies and Gentlemen, we live in a world where Mirror Mirror has an Oscar nomination. Sure, that likely has a lot to do with the posthumous honouring of Eiko Ishioka’s past work, but yeah, thought it was worth pointing out.
Mirror Mirror.
Anyways, as you’ve probably figured out by now, Oscar nominations are in, and for the most part they’re pretty good. None of it is particularly surprising, though it would’ve been nice to see films like Cloud Atlas, The Grey, Killing them Softly and Looper get some love.
Before I get to the list, here’s my rundown of the good and bad aspects of these nominations.
Good: I really hope Life of Pi gets some awards. It would be great to see it win the Visual Effects award. I feel that these awards should always be given for effects that serve a film’s story, and not just due to sheer quantity.
I love that Roger Deakins got the nom for his work on Skyfall. In my mind, there has never been a better example of what digital photography can do than Skyfall. Just marvellous.
And finally, I kinda hope Argo cleans up.
Bad: Speaking of Argo, where the hell is Ben Affleck’s nomination for Best Director? He is the guiding light that brought that whole film together so successfully. Also, Quentin Tarantino and Paul Thomas Anderson not getting nominations feels sort of criminal. QT has to go up against Mark Boal again for Best Original Screenplay, and it seems likely he’ll lose out again, but hopefully not.
The lack of an acting nomination for Suraj Sharma of Life of Pi is also quite strange. He spent most of the movie alone, acting opposite a CGI tiger, and still no love? Hmm.
Enough waffling on, here are the nominees, courtesy of IMDB:
