It seems we are getting closer and closer to the movie reboot of Image Comics' Spawn that creator Todd McFarlane has been talking about for years.

First the news of Jamie Foxx 'agressively pursuing' the Spawn reboot as a starring vehicle, and now McFarlane has dropped some more news on the project's progress.

During this week's Toronto Fan Expo, McFarlane told The Gate website "The thing that keeps slowing it down is that the negotiation I’ve done is I write, produce, direct, but I’ve got to push a lot of my other endeavors off to the side so I can just get tunnel vision on it.” He continued, “Everybody at my company is now going, ‘We’ve got to find Todd the time to finish all this."

McFarlane has dabbled in directing before, with his numerous award-winning music videos, but how would he fare on a big budget comic book movie? McFarlane clarified that he has a different vision for Spawn.

"I think it’s a quick shoot. It’s not going to be a giant budget with a lot of special effects, it’s going to be more of a horror movie and a thriller movie, not a superhero one. I’ve got so many people phoning now that I’ve got to get it done. I’ve made some promises to people this year,” said McFarlane.

“We’ve had some big names… come into the office and go, ‘We want to be in it.' He continued, "Sometimes they give me their pitch, I give them my pitch, I go, ‘We can get in it, this is how it goes,’ and so those types of actors, Academy Award guys, they’re going, ‘As soon as that scripts done, we’re going.’ So once we get this thing done, we’ll get it off the ground with some big names.” So what do you say? Are you excited? Sure, you'd be forgiven for thinking Todd McFarlane has been blowing smoke up our skirts this hole time, but when you have Jamie Foxx saying he wants to do it, it's likely going to be happening. I do like the idea of Spawn as a smaller, darker horror movie, though. Anything to get away from the shitfest that was the 1997 movie version. Let's hope we finally get Sam & Twitch in the film this time.

Check out this 8-minute interview video with McFarlane where he talks about the film, among other things.
