Stoker

Director: Park Chan-Wook

Release Status: Limited

After India's father dies, her Uncle Charlie, who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her unstable mother. She comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives and becomes increasingly infatuated with him.

Must See or Wait till DVD? At long last, Park Chan-Wook’s English Language debut hits Australian cinemas. It took its sweet time but it’s finally here in Limited Release. You can check out my full review for it right here. Speaking for myself, I pass along a strong recommendation and I still regard it as a candidate for Best of the Year material. Speaking for my partner in crime, and Neon Maniacs founder, Stephen Lambrechts. Lambrechts holds a little more of a mixed opinion towards it.

Director: Adam Wingard

Release Status: Limited

When the Davison family comes under attack during their wedding anniversary getaway, the gang of mysterious killers soon learns that one of victims harbour’s a secret talent for fighting back.

Must See or Wait till DVD? The Internet Buzz has been oh so very strong for this Indie Horror festival favourite. Unfortunately we don’t really have an opinion to share, as we haven’t seen it yet. Hopefully to be rectified this weekend as I do plan to see it. There’s no denying the positive buzz that it has gained but whether or not the glowing buzz can meet expectations is another story. If you were a horror fan, then I would urge you to make the trip out to see it. Help the struggling genre, which is so consistently fucked in the ass within this country, by showing your support for it.

V/H/S/2

Director(s): Gareth Evans, Jason Eisener, Eduardo Sanchez, Timo Tiahianto, Gregg Hale, Simon Barrett, Adam Wingard

Release Status: Limited

Searching for a missing student, two private investigators break into his house and find collection of VHS tapes. Viewing the horrific contents of each cassette, they realize there may be dark motives behind the student's disappearance.

Must See or Wait till DVD? See It! For the love of all things Neon, see it! Or let me put it this way. If you love the horror genre then you owe it to yourself to see this film! Hands down, it is one of the best horror films of the year so far. Gareth Evan’s incredible segment easily makes it a must see. If you love the horror genre then by all means get out there and support the genre. Take a trip Cinema Nova or Chauvel in Sydney and see it.

jOBS

Director: Joshua Michael Stern

Release Status: Wide

The story of Steve Jobs' ascension from college dropout into one of the most revered creative entrepreneurs of the 20th century.

Must See or Wait till DVD? Nothing about it has stood out to me. Ashton Kutcher looks the part but whether he has the acting chops to pull off Steve Jobs is another story. Middle of the road would easily sum up my feelings towards it so far. Maybe if you have a strong interest in Steve Jobs and the history of Apple then this might appeal to you. But if that were the case then I would suggest you just go and watch the awesome 1999-film The Pirates of Silicon Valley.

Red 2

Director: Dean Parisot

Release Status: Wide

Retired C.I.A. agent Frank Moses reunites his unlikely team of elite operatives for a global quest to track down a missing portable nuclear device.

Must See or Wait till DVD? I felt the first movie was amicable, if not forgettable, fun. I’m more or less expecting more of the same from this sequel. The returning ensemble cast is entirely likable. The new additions of Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Byung Hun-Lee are welcomed. But I’m not expecting anything more then another fun dumb romp that will probably end up being just as forgettable in the long run.
