New Trailer for Cannibal Horror-Remake WE ARE WHAT WE ARE
Posted by Daniel Mann
Earlier in the year, I had a chance to check out Jim Mickle's upcoming remake of the Spanish Cannibal Horror film Somos Lo Que Hay -- or as it is known by its English title We Are What We Are -- at the Sydney Film Festival.
Remake is usually a dreaded word amongst film geeks. Tell anyone that you're remaking a foreign horror film and it is bound to be met with a cerain degree of trepidation. But good news everyone, Jim Mickle's retelling is a completely different film that transplants the action of the original film from the seedy districts of Mexico City to the Rural Backdrop of Southern America. Allowing for a good old slice of American Gothic.
We Are What We Are is a very unassuming film where the tension is always simmering underneath just waiting to erupt. When it erupts, it grabs you by the throat unexpectedly and bites in hard. Unlike most Cannibal films that focus on gore for gore hound sake, it keeps the gruesome stuff to a minimum and is all the better for doing so. This is straight up a character piece combined with a slice of Southern Gothic American Horror and it is nothing short of impressive.
Skip to the end, I truly enjoyed Jim Mickle's re-imagining as it turned out to be one of the biggest surprises of Sydney Film Festival 2013. Now it finally has a very moody and well cut trailer to promote it. Check it out up above. ------------------------
