Studio Ghibli’s THE TALE OF PRINCESS KAGUYA Gets a Full Trailer

Posted by Daniel Mann

Two full-length Animated Features by Studio Ghibli in the one year. That is a treat in and off itself. Following the coat tales of Hayao Miyazaki’s Exquisite Bio Pic THE WIND RISES comes THE TALE OF PRINCESS KAGUYA. Helmed by Isao Takahata; the talented Director behind GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES.

Originally planned to release simultaneously in theatres with THE WIND RISES as Ghibli’s first Double Feature since MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO and GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES. However, production was delayed forcing PRINCESS KAGUYA to release this November instead. With the Japanese release rapidly approaching, Ghibli has released a full-length trailer for the film.

Needless to say but it looks absolutely gorgeous with its minimalist hand drawn style. It looks like the talented folks over at Ghibli have breathed life into a Manga. Its minimalist art style is notably reminiscent of MY NEIGHBOR THE YAMADAS, which was also directed by Takahata.

Here is a brief rundown of the plot (courtesy of IMDB)

“An old man makes a living by selling bamboo. One day, he finds a princess in a bamboo. The princess is only the size of a finger. Her name is Kaguya. When Kaguya grows up, 5 men from prestigious families propose to her. Kaguya asks the men to find memorable marriage gifts for her, but the 5 men are unable to find what Kaguya wants. Then, the Emperor of Japan proposes to her.”

Suffice to say that there is no word yet on International Distribution or Release Dates outside of Japan. Making the inevitable long wait all the more excruciating for us International Ghibli Fans. Almost makes me wish I could fly back to Japan for one weekend just to see it.
