Marcey's 10 Favourite Games of The Past Generation
Posted by Marcey Papandrea (follow me @supermarcey)
Ahoy Maniacs! To celebrate the end of the current gaming console generation (and to welcome this new generation) each of the editors at Neon Maniacs.com decided to write about their favourite games released during that time! We'll also throw in some discussion of some fun extra stuff, too.
We've seen Wade's list, Dan's list, Stephen's list, Uncle Ant'knee's list and now its time for something a little different, with Marcey's! Enjoy!
I wanted to do a list of my favourite games from this past generation of gaming. Unlike my colleagues here at N-M, I don't have a whole heap of consoles (retro ones yes) and my last gen consoles are the Xbox 360 and the Wii. It didn't feel right to make a Top 10 list since I haven't played nearly as many games as I should to compile a list like that. So I figured naming my favourites would be a lot more appropriate.
FAVOURITE TEN GAMES OF THE PAST GENERATION
10.) WWE2K14 (XBox360)
Yes this is a new game but holy moly has it won me over. I have played it a lot since I bought it on release day. As a huge wrestling fan, I was quite eager to get my hands on this as it features the 30 Years Of Wrestlemania. Let me tell you, that mode does not disappoint, re-enacting key matches and having objectives to fulfil is a lot of fun! I haven't been entirely happy with Wrestling games over the last few years but this one really blew me away. It's easy to pick up and the game play is feels very authentic, and I have to mention the incredible roster of current and past superstars is GREAT!
9.) Wii Sports Resort
Seriously, Wii Sports the game that comes with every Wii is great fun but they really outdid themselves with the Resort version. I have spent countless hours playing this game, and it's fun to play with others as well and have competitions. That is part of the fun with a Wii, being able to game with others and we all can laugh about how silly we look. My favourite game on here would be the archery, its really well set up and its quite the challenge.
8.) Max Payne 3 (XBox360)
Having not played Max Payne before I had no idea what to expect going into this one. Being more of a PC gamer and playing this type of 1st person shooter with a controller and not a keyboard was quite off putting at first. But damn, after 10 minutes this game had me, and it hasn't really let me go. Story modes in games aren't a big deal for me, I guess that goes with my retro gamer mind, but here it wasn't too intrucive and I quite enjoyed it. The controls didn't take me too long to get used to and I picked it up pretty well and I still have a freakin' blast playing this.
7.) Marvel vs. Capcom III (XBox360)
I am a huge lover of fighting games, and I have spent many hours and many days playing the original Marvel vs. Capcom. I was full of glee getting my hands on this and it really did not disappoint, it delivered the goods and best of all I could kick some serious ass with my favourite characters! It is what I love about these games, the characters and the arcade feel of gaming, there is nothing like that feeling. Nostalgia probably does add to my love of this, but I truly believe it is a great game.
6.) Lego Batman (Wii)
One of the first games I got to buy for myself was Lego Batman when I got the Wii, and seriously these Lego games are so much fun and they are sooooo damned cute! There is a lot to do with these games, you can play it out normally and then go back and collect things, it was really one of my first experiences with that type of game play and I liked it. It's easy to pick up and learn and it gave me a lot of hours of awesome fun and laughs.
5.) Injustice: Gods Among Us (XBox360)
Another recent game and another fighting one, I did really love this and duh still do! This is the game that made Aquaman the best character to play as. This game does have a lot going for it, a fantastic comic series (written by local writer Tom Taylor), a really interesting and twisted story within the game and it changes the dynamics of DC's characters. I love that it flips so much around, and there is so much you can do with it. The moves are great to learn and it's pretty neat discovering which characters work and which don't. It is kind of funny Batman for me anyway is one of the worst to play as …
4.) Street Fighter IV (XBox360)
Having grown up with the original Street Fighter games, I was pumped to play this when it came out. Damn, this is easily one of the best fighter games and right on top with Street Fighter games. Old and new characters are here, it has that arcade feel game play that I love and the difficulty isn't too insane that its unplayable. This is the type of game that I can waste an entire day on and not regret one moment of it. I LOVE THIS GAME!
3.) Wii Sport
I am including this because since we bought the Wii we still play this and have so much fun. The bowling has been the source of many family feuds and fun times, life wouldn't have been as good without this one.
2.) Mortal Kombat 9 (XBox360)
Mortal Kombat has been one of my all time favourite games since I played the first one at an arcade upon release. The banning of this game in Australia was crushing, but eventually it came out and I got to get my hands on it. This game is great, it really builds on what has come before it and offers players some new features (the X-Ray thing is awesome). The women are naturally in less clothes than before and Johnny Cage is a dead ringer for Jean Claude Van Damme now. But it is all in good fun, you cannot take this game seriously AT ALL. I find each character has their good points and not so good points, but they are all quite playable and its fun to learn fatalities. I'll never tire of Mortal Kombat.
1.) Super Mario Bros Wii
In what will come as no surprise to those that know me, yes this is my favourite game of this past generation. Super Mario Bros games are favourites of mine, they share a spot in my heart. I was really excited for this game, and I loved that they made it a side scroller and they just made it more impressive than ever before. It did take me a bit to get used to it, coming off of Super Mario World on my virtual console. But once I got into it, I couldn't stop playing, I felt right at home. Nothing to me is more fun than playing one of these games and if Mario Bros games were the only ones I could play for the rest of my life, I'd be happy as heck.
